9:35-10:35 Dr. Michael Stephens -Wholehearted Libraries: Meeting the Needs of Community
We should bring our hearts to work, and qualities such as open-mindedness, emotional intelligence, and reflective action are all part of this process. Services steeped in humanism, compassion, and understanding should be the cornerstone of what we do, and why we do it, for all members of our communities, including the underserved. Not only do libraries need high tech, they also need staff who approach their work with a wholehearted attitude.
The most important challenge we are facing in libraries now is ensuring we are open and welcoming for everyone. The world has changed so much in the last few years. We need to make sure our services meet the needs of those who might visit the library to feel safe. Those who need access to information and services that may help them get on solid ground in their lives. The underserved and the invisible should feel welcome and encouraged in our spaces, both physical, virtual and across the community itself. And every voice should be heard. Every story told.
We should approach information work in all of its forms with an open heart. We need staff to lead with the heart and to see every interaction as an opportunity to improve someone's life -- remove a burden, give some pleasure, and help them grow, etc. The best librarians make that emotional investment because they believe in the communities they serve.

Dr. Michael Stevens
Dr. Michael Stephens is Associate Professor in the School of Information at San Jose State University. He has delivered keynotes and workshops throughout the US and internationally on topics related to creative library services and learning. He has written for major LIS professionals publications, including 13 years with Library Journal as a columnist. ALA Editions has published two collections of his writings: The Heart of Librarianship (2016) and Wholehearted Librarianship (2019).
Lauren MooreMs. Moore has served in various leadership positions at public libraries and library systems throughout her career. Most recently, she has served as the Executive Director of the Pioneer Library System where she leads the development of 42 small and rural libraries in Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming and Livingston Counties by coordinating shared services. She previously served as the Assistant Director of the Pioneer Library System and the Deputy Director of the Southern Tier Library System. Ms. Moore has also served in leadership positions for various library professional organizations as well as for local, regional and statewide community service groups, including most recently, The New York State Complete Count Commission. The Commission was created to inform and help direct the State's efforts in the 2020 Census.
Ms. Moore earned her Master of Library and Information Sciences degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Rutgers University.
