Last Day for is December 20, 2018
The program through SCRLC will be ending on December 20, 2018. Lynda has changed their business model (after being acquired by LinkedIn and then Microsoft), so we are no longer able to offer this service as a membership organization. If you would like to inquire about or Linkedin Learning for your own organization or library, contact Julie Whelen (; 805-755-1890). Take Action
In the spirit of #LibrariesRespondwe feature weekly action items that positively contribute to the library community amidst natural disasters, drug epidemics, political unrest and hate crimes.
Next Tuesday, the Register of Copyrights Selection and Accountability Act (S. 1010), a Senate companion to House bill (H.R. 1695) will be voted on by the Senate Rules and Administration Committee.
This legislation removes the hiring authority of the Copyright Register from the Librarian of Congress to the president. It would politicize the Register's position to the public's detriment and slow the critically needed modernization of the Copyright Office. The bill also grants the president power to fire the appointee at any time. Further, while the Senate would at least retain the power to confirm the nominee, the House would no longer have any influence on the selection process.
*Email your U.S. Senators and ask them to vote against it.*

The Director's Cup
Cheery Friday Greetings!
We'll offer some tips that we learned on Friday for bystander intervention and information about t implicit bias, soon. Thanks so much to Fabina Colon and Phoebe Brown for presenting the workshop! The All-Advisory Committee meeting transpired after the workshop, so for this edition I am going to talk a bit about that aspect of the day and committee participation.
At the meeting, after hearing summaries of what each committee has been and will be working on, the room took up two discussion points: ideas for continuing education programming and how to design the shark tank/guppy tank grant element that is in our plan of service. I look forward to reviewing the results after today's Finance & Audit Committee Meeting!
There is generally room on our advisory committees for new members. Technically the terms are three years and begin in January, but members who wish to remain involved beyond the initial three years can usually remain.
The Advisory Committee section of the website lists the six committees and information about them, i.e., their purpose, role, activities, and members. Ideally the committees reflect the makeup of our multitype membership. Awareness & Advocacy could benefit from a hospital member; Digitization and Educational Services need a school representative; Hospital Library Services ideally could use a public library member; ACITS (Information Technology & Services) and Resource Sharing could benefit from a special library and hospital library representatives. All of the committees would be happy to have additional members from any type!
What to do if your interested? Contact any of the SCRLC ex officio liaisons listed on the committee pages.
There are also Special Interest Groups that need cheerleaders to engage our community as well as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Group that works with Awareness and Advocacy. Contact Jessica about the SIGs and me about the D-E-I task group.
Yours in partnership,
Mary-Carol Lindbloom
