Description: Examine the notion of privilege, including how privilege and unconscious bias create barriers for patrons, staff, and community, and how these barriers and interactions can play out in microaggressions. This workshop introduces the concept of privilege as a social justice concept and explores how to identify and begin to address microaggressions in the library.

Speakers: Briana Jarnagin is the Program Coordinator, Community Engagement in the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services at the American Library Association. In this role, she provides programmatic support for recruitment and retention efforts through expertise in community engagement, including communicating across diverse groups, event management, and engaging ALA membership in leadership opportunities and professional development tools. Briana is a member of the 2019 Chicago cohort of the Obama Foundation Community Leadership Corps, serves on the National Diversity & Social Justice Committee for the Latina-founded organization Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc., and previously interned with the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the Center for Neighborhood Technology. She holds a BA in geography with minors in sociology and geographic information science from Northeastern Illinois University.

Kristin Lahurd is Interim Director of ALA's Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS). Kristin and her team create programs and resources that promote recruitment and retention for the field of librarianship and best practices in serving underrepresented communities. She also coordinates ODLOS' continuing education efforts, including workshops and webinars on topics surrounding equity, diversity, inclusion, literacy, and outreach. Kristin brings to the position several years of work in education, including roles as a literacy coach, English teacher, and reading teacher in the middle grades. Prior to her work in public schools, Kristin held positions in public health and social service. She has master's degrees in education and public health and a bachelor's degree in English.
