Apply to become a NYDCLC Fellow!

The New York Data Carpentry Library Consortium is a brand new, IMLS-funded effort to develop cutting-edge data science support in Central and Western New York. 

We are a group of librarians who collaborate to provide data trainings for academic, public, and school librarians and their patrons. 

We are looking for additional librarians to accept fellowships to join our steering committee. 

So…how can you get involved?

Option A. Attend a Fall 2019 NYDCLC Skills Workshop

All workshops are free and open to all on a first-registered, first-serve basis, and include lunch. No prior experience or knowledge is expected. Workshops are inclusive, collaborative, and welcoming to all types of technical and professional backgrounds.

If you work for a public library or a library at a public higher education institution, we will help with your travel costs. 

#1: Library Carpentry -- Intro to Data & OpenRefine

ONE DAY: October 25, 2019, 9a – 5p

Library Carpentry's aim is to teach researchers basic concepts, skills, and tools for working with data so that they can get more done in less time, and with less pain. 

This workshop will start at the beginning, teaching participants how to decide when to use an automated or computational approach, and breaking down jargon. Then, we'll move on to regular expression language and learn how to use it to match and extract text and clean data. 

During the second half of the day, we'll do a deep dive with the software OpenRefine ("a power tool for working with messy data") and learn how to use it for advanced data cleaning, transformations, and other functions.

#2: Library Carpentry -- Intro to Data, Tidy Data, & Git

ONE DAY: November 1, 9a – 5pm

Henrietta Public Library, Henrietta NY (8 miles south of central Rochester)

Library Carpentry's aim is to teach researchers basic concepts, skills, and tools for working with data so that they can get more done in less time, and with less pain. 

This workshop will start at the beginning, teaching participants how to decide when to use an automated or computational approach, and breaking down jargon. Then, we'll move on to regular expression language and learn how to use it to match and extract text and clean data. 

During the second half of the day, we'll tackle data in spreadsheets ("Tidy Data"), including good data practices, formatting problems, quality assurance, and other considerations. Finally, we'll get an introduction to Git and GitHub, the preeminent tools for collaborating on and sharing code and data.

Students, teachers, researchers, librarians, and members of the general public are welcome to register. 

Option B. Become a NYDCLC Fellow & Train as a Data Instructor 

We are looking for more New York State librarians to become data instructors and join us in running the Consortium! 

Do you want to:

• Teach Carpentries workshops to your patrons and/or colleagues? 
• Learn best practices for technical-skills pedagogy? 
• Collaborate with other NYS librarians to build a regional community of practice? 

And…do you work at a public library, school library, or the library of a public college or university? 

Please consider applying for a NYDCLC Fellowship by October 6. 

The application process is very lightweight, requiring only a statement of interest. 

Read the Call for Participation and Instructions for Applying. 

NYDCLC Fellows agree to: 

• Attend one of the Fall 2019 NYDCLC Carpentries workshops, if possible.
• Attend Carpentries instructor training in person, March 26-27, 2020. (All travel, lodging, and food costs will be covered by our grant)
• Complete additional activities required for Carpentries instructor certification. (Seethis information.)
• Commit to leading a workshop in their local community by the end of 2020. 
• Collaborate with the rest of the NYDCLC fellows to plan events, do outreach, and plan priorities for the future. 
• Attend monthly steering committee meetings virtually
• Serve on a subcommittee for NYDCLC governance (a few hours per month) 
• Attend and present at the first NYDCLC Symposium in June/July 2020

Benefits of a NYDCLC Fellowship:

• Become a certified Carpentries instructor
• Receive stipends to attend workshops and travel throughout the region. 
• Contribute to the development of the future direction and priorities of NYDCLC
• Contribute to building a community of data science and data pedagogy practice in New York State
• Access to a community of experts through The Carpentries
