Who should attend: Any library staff, trustees or volunteers who would like to prepared in case they witness an overdose.

 

Description: This webinar will cover some brief information about Opioids, how to notice if someone has overdosed, and how to respond to an Opioid overdose. The webinar will also cover information about Narcan, what it is, its strengths and limitations and how to administer it to a person in need. 

 

Training objectives include:

  • to increase understanding and awareness of fatal overdoses related to opioids and the impact within the community 
  • to identify risk factors for an overdose 
  • to be able to recognize a suspected overdose 
  • to be able to identify the five essential steps for first responders as outlined in the SAMHSA Opioid Overdose Prevention Toolkit in the event of an overdose 
  • to be able to correctly use naloxone to save lives 
  • to understand how to access the Naloxone Co-payment Assistance Program (NCAP) to obtain free or low-cost naloxone.

Presenter: Stacy Cangelosi is the Education/Prevention Director at the Alcohol & Drug Council, a private nonprofit agency that reduces, and works to eliminate, drug and alcohol abuse in Tompkins County by providing outpatient treatment services along with education and community-based prevention strategies. She has been with the agency since 2001. She received her Masters in Social Work at Syracuse University. While there, she worked in the Health Center, doing outreach around issues of sexuality and sexual health. Through her work there, she discovered a passion for health education and outreach. In 2010, she became a Licensed Master Social Worker and uses the tenets of that to guide her work in prevention. At the Council, she strives to raise awareness about addiction and remove the stigma associated with the disease.
