9:15     Keynote Presentation - Paralibrarians Speak Out!

           What's a "Paralibrarian"? Allison Sloan, 2010 Library Journal Paralibrarian of the Year, will answer that question and more about the hows and whys of paralibrarianship. Looking for a mentor? What's a Book Cart Drill team? How did NY State Library Assistants influence the MA PARA Program? Allison will share stories and experiences of Massachusetts paralibrarians that will have you cheering for the exciting partnership between librarians and paralibrarians. She will empower you to embrace your role as a library support staffer ready to guide your own career and make a difference in libraries.

  • Allison Sloan, Reading Public Library, Reading, MA. Allison Sloan has worked as a Sr. Library Associate at the Reading Public Library in Massachusetts for 23 years. Hired as a Circulation Technician, she worked on a systems training project, has been responsible for serials, paperback and audiobook ordering, and currently coordinates Interlibrary Loans. Allison was the 2010 Library Journal Paralibrarian of the Year, and is most proud of her role as a paralibrarian advocate. She has served on the Board of the MLA Paralibrarian Section since 2003, as Chairperson and Conference Committee Liaison. She has a BA degree from Boston University; is an Associate Editor for the ALA Associates online newsletter; received the Library Leadership Massachusetts Certification and Basic Library Techniques Certification from the MA Board of Library Commissioners; the Paralibrarian Recognition of Achievement (PARA) Level III; and was awarded MLA Paralibrarian Advocate of the Year. Allison is a beta tester and candidate for the ALA Library Support Staff Certification Program, and a contributor to an ALA Librarian's Handbook series on Middle Managers (anticipated pub date 2013).

10:45    Coping With Change in the Changing Library Environment - Come spend a lively 75 minutes with Edward Gancarz of the SHA+RP Institute working on the skill sets of listening and how you react to the ever increasing cycle of change impacting our libraries today. Your interpersonal skills around respect, thanking people, attitude, and the legacy we leave behind will be touched on.

  • Edward Gancarz, SHARPInstitute. Born and raised in New York, Ed has 27 years of experience in industry. After spending the majority of his career with a Fortune 50 company, Ed designed and deployed the SHA+RP institute for a large distributor in the United States. Based on the success of that rollout, the institute was inaugurated as its own company in 2002. Ed has an MBA, as well as, a BS in Speech Communication from Syracuse University. He also holds two AAS degrees in Information Systems and Criminal Law.

Social Media

  • Gwen Glazer, Cornell University. Gwen Glazer is the social media coordinator and staff writer/editor at Cornell University Library. She earned her MLIS from Syracuse University's iSchool in May 2010, and she served as the Google Policy Fellow for the American Library Association's Office for Information Technology Policy in the summer of 2010.

  • Nancy Howe, Baldwinsville Public Library. Nancy Howe is currently the Public Computing Center Project Librarian at the Baldwinsville Public Library. She has spent the last two years overseeing a Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) grant where she works with senior citizens, job seekers and small business owners providing computer training, resume writing and basic digital literacy skills classes. Prior to working at Baldwinsville, she was employed for 12 years with the Central New York Library Resources Council.
  • Angela Pierpaoli, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. Angela Pierpaoli has been a Librarian at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library for over eleven years. She worked as a subject specialist in the Information Services Department for ten of those years before moving on to the Collection Development Team, where she ordered the nonfiction for the Library system. She is currently in Technology Support, where she works on improving measurement and evaluation processes. She also manages the Library's databases and subject guides, and is the creator and administrator of the Library's Pinterest site.
  • Clare Rauch, Upstate Medical University. Clare Rauch is a Clinical Reference Librarian at Upstate Medical University. She is the project leader for the Health Sciences Library's effort to promote social media use at Upstate, and across the health care field. She also serves as a member of the Social Media Committee for all of Upstate. Clare earned her library degree from the University at Buffalo.

Library Security

  • Olivia Maggio, Upstate Medical University. Olivia Maggio is an Evening/Weekend Supervisor at Upstate Medical University's Health Sciences Library. As a liaison to security, she actively works to make the library the safest building on campus. In addition to her regular duties, Olivia enjoys creating community engagement though her facilitation of monthly and quarterly art exhibits throughout the library. She received her MSLIS from Syracuse University.

  • Wyman Miles, Director of IT Security, Cornell University. I started in higher-ed as a UNIX/VMS systems administrator 21 years ago. After a stint doing desktop support and UNIX admin for Cal State LA, and supporting user services at USC, I wound up at Rice University, eventually becoming Manager of Infrastructure. There, my team developed high-availability e-mail systems, provided centralized campus middleware services, and ran a student consultant program for the dorms. In 2004, I moved to Ithaca, NY to take a position as a security engineer for Cornell University. Along the way, I developed Spider, which is a tool to find certain types of confidential data. I've since become Director of IT Security/CISO for Cornell, responsible for a team of five security engineers, incident response, policy, security governance, etc.

  • photo of Katie Whitney Katie Whitney, Onondaga Public Library. Katie Whitney is a longtime employee of the Onondaga County Public Library and a manger at the Central Library, the largest urban library in CNY. She has worked on various security related projects and is a member of OCPL's security committee.

    Michael Kankiewicz is Manager of the Silverman Multimedia Center (SMC) for the Arts & Sciences Libraries at the University at Buffalo.  Michael is a Library Media Specialist who is especially interested in high school students transitioning to college.  The SMC circulates over 10,000 DVDs, Videotapes, CD-ROMs and other media formats.   The collections include materials ranging from highly technical to popular culture, with the primary focus being on materials that support teaching.

  • Jennifer Schlossberg, Tompkins County Public Library. Jennifer Palmer Schlossberg is the E-Services Librarian at the Tompkins County Public Library in Ithaca, NY. She has worked as a reference librarian in public libraries for 14 years with a focus on making technology accessible to the general public.

  • photo of Kristin West Kristen West, Schenectady County Community College. Kristin West works in Circulation at Schenectady County Community College, in Schenectady, NY. She has a BFA in Media Studies from Syracuse University, and has worked in a variety of fields before coming to SCCC, including teaching and freelance writing. SCCC is currently in its nascent stage of promoting E-books in addition to its online reference resources, having just added a collection of E-readers to its technical equipment available for circulation.

  • photo of Karlen Chase Karlen Chase, WNYLRC. Karlen Chase, WNYLRC. Karlen Chase is Digital Services & Circuit Librarian at the Western New York Library Resources Council in Buffalo, NY. She manages the Council's digital projects and provides library services to three rural hospitals as a medical circuit librarian in the Hospital Library Services Program. Karlen's previous library experience includes positions as a reference librarian at D'Youville College and a corporate librarian at Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, Inc.
  • photo of Deidre Joyce Déirdre Joyce, CLRC. Déirdre Joyce is the Assistant Director and Regional Archivist at the Central New York Library Resources Council.  In this role, she also manages the Council's digitization program, which includes the regional contributions and training for the New York Heritage Digital Collections project.  Prior to coming to CLRC, Déirdre worked as a reference librarian and as University Archivist at The University of Texas at Tyler.  She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Madison, holding dual master's degrees in history and library and information studies, with a specialization in archives and records management.

  • photo of Laura Osterhout Laura Osterhout, RRLC. Laura Osterhout is Member Services Librarian at the Rochester Regional Library Council in Fairport, NY. She manages the Council's continuing education program, training center, information technology services, and digital projects. Laura's previous library experience includes positions as Regional Services Manager at the Western New York Library Resources Council, Assistant Librarian at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, and Government Documents Specialist at the Elmira College Library.
