Location: SCRLC Offices, Clinton Hall, 108 N. Cayuga St., Ithaca

Who should attend: Any library staff, trustees or volunteers who would like to prepared in case they witness an overdose.

Description: This training will cover some brief information about Opioids, how to notice if someone has overdosed, and how to respond to an Opioid overdose. The training will also cover information about Narcan, what it is, its strengths and limitations and how to administer it to a person in need. Participants have the option to take home a free Narcan kit for their their library. 

Training objectives include:

  • to increase understanding and awareness of fatal overdoses related to opioids and the impact within the community 
  • to identify risk factors for an overdose 
  • to be able to recognize a suspected overdose 
  • to be able to identify the five essential steps for first responders as outlined in the SAMHSA Opioid Overdose Prevention Toolkit in the event of an overdose 
  • to be able to correctly use naloxone to save lives 
  • to understand how to access the Naloxone Co-payment Assistance Program (NCAP) to obtain free or low-cost naloxone.

 

652_Dunlap.JPGInstructor: Jeff Dunlap, MSW, is the Education/Prevention Coordinator at the Alcohol and Drug Council of Tompkins County. Jeff has over 10 years of experience working in the field of suppressed populations and populations in need. He has over 8 years of experience working in Prevention and education type fields and giving presentations. He has worked with many populations, such as those with different functional needs, the LGBTQ+ community and now people in recovery or at high risk for a substance abuse issue.
