This webinar will focus both on the concepts surrounding DEI and DEI-related concepts of identity and culture and the importance of cultural competence as it applies to both individuals and Library Information Organizations (LIOs) as workplaces.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand concepts related to DEI, including the importance of defining "basic" terms • Discuss identity and culture as they apply to LIO workplaces • Define and understand cultural competence and cultural humility within LIOs.
Presenter: Dr. Kawanna Bright is Assistant Professor of Library Science at East Carolina University where she teaches courses in Library Administration & Management, Services to Diverse Populations, Academic Librarianship, and Collection Development. Dr. Bright earned her doctorate in Research Methods & Statistics (2018, University of Denver) and an MLIS (2003, University of Washington). Prior to earning her doctorate, she was an academic librarian for 12 years, specializing in public services. Her research focuses on assessment in libraries; equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in libraries; the application of research methodology to the study of library and information science; and the importance of the liaison librarianship role in academic libraries. She is a 2021 NCLA Round Table for Ethnic Minority Concerns' LIS Instructor Roadbuilder Award recipient.
