The aim of the webinar is to leave participants with an understanding of how diverse documents can solve the puzzle of identifying an Underground Railroad story.

The definition of the Underground Railroad is inclusive of more than a physical site, but included one or more of the numerous roles in the process that led to the safe travel of a Freedom Seeker during the slavery period in the United States.


Participants will learn:

  • The Difference between the Underground Railroad and the Freedom Journey
  • How the search can begin with a primary or secondary source
  • Examples of facilities preserving a record that includes reference to the local community's involvement with the Underground Railroad

Presenter: Harry Bradshaw Matthews is the Retired Associate Dean and Director of the Office of Intercultural Affairs at Hartwick College. He is the President of the American Society of Freedmen Descendants, as well as the Founding President of the United States Colored Troops Institute for Local History and Family Research at Hartwick. He is a current member of the Board of Directors of the SUNY Oneonta Foundation, as well as a trustee of the Greater Oneonta Historical Society. He is the author of multiple publications on African American genealogical research and has received numerous awards and recognition for his work. He is a Killingsworth descendant from Denmark, South Carolina, the grandson of formerly enslaved Africans documented back to 1762.
