Medical Library Services Program

Medical Library Services Program Funds Available

Do you have interlibrary loan requests that are filled by Upstate Medical Center and other National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) resource libraries? If yes, the Medical Information Services Program (MISP) is for you! MISP provides a pool of funds made available by the New York State Library and administered through SCRLC and the other Empire State Library Network Councils. MISP funds can help you pay for such requests.

The MISP program:

  • improves access to medical and consumer health information to benefit the residents of New York State
  • makes the resources of the NN/LM network directly accessible by libraries in the ESLN regions (note: local and regional health information resources should always be accessed first before approaching NN/LM).

All types of libraries and library systems are eligible to use funding. MISP priorities include medical, clinical and consumer health information for libraries in not-for-profit institutions that deal with direct patient care, are active participants in regional resource sharing, and that receive adequate library support from their parent institution or funding body.

"How do I actually use or request MISP funds?" you may wonder.

Occasional Requests: If you have an occasional request that ends up at one of the resource libraries, send the invoice to SCRLC for payment. You can FAX (607-272-0740), send by mail, or scan. If scanning, email it to Danna Harris at dharris@scrlc.org.

Frequent Requests: If you have several requests a year being filled by the NN/LM resource libraries, you can set up an Electronic Funds Transfer Service (EFTS) account with the University of Connecticut, which is the administrator for the Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) of the NN/LM, which includes New York State. Setting up an EFTS account is straightforward, and the folks at UConn are always there to help. Here is a link to the page: https://efts.uchc.edu/Common/index.aspx. On that page you will find "helpful links" (bottom left); click on "forms." You will need to complete the application and a memorandum of agreement. If you do set up an account, please let Danna know. She will need your LIBID in order to deposit money into your account. If you also provide her with your password, she can monitor your account and replenish funding if you are running low.

NN/LM MAR Resource Libraries: Visit https://nnlm.gov/mar/members/directory for a list.

Resource Libraries in other NN/LM Regions: MISP funds can be used to pay for medical/health requests even if they are out-of-state as long as it is an NN/LM resource library. Requests ending up at the National Library of Medicine are also eligible for MISP. Here is a list of other NN/LM regions: http://nnlm.gov/ Click on the map to locate resource libraries outside of MAR.
